"Included is a very significant dress worn by screen icon Marilyn Monroe in her final film Something’s Gotta Give (20th Century, 1962). The figure hugging silk crepe dress is printed with scattered painterly roses in shades of persimmon and deep cherry with a plunging V back. The interior of the studio constructed dress has hand finished details, is lined with ivory soufflé and has boning to the waistline. Jean Louis was the costume designer on the film. Monroe wore this dress when her character, who had been proclaimed dead but returns from being stranded on an island for five years, is introduced in the film and reunited with her children who do not realize she is their mother. Monroe was fired from the film and when the studio tried to replace her with Lee Remick, the film’s leading man Dean Martin refused to finish the film without Monroe. Her untimely death came less than a month after being let go from the production. The dress can be seen in numerous newspaper articles announcing her death."

Thanks go to Mr. George Vreeland Hill for the update.

I wrote about the dress when it aired on the show Final Offer 3 years ago.
When AMC announced the Mad Men Marathon leading to the Finale last night, we first turned it on as 'background noise' mostly...then found myself falling asleep and waking up to it. First thing that struck me was how Kiernan Shipka "Sally Draper" grew up in front of us and what an excellent actor Mason Vale Cotton "Bobby Draper" is, he tore at my heart strings.

Even though at times Bettie made me shake my head in disgust at her parental skills I would not, could never wish cancer on her or the suffering that comes from losing a mother on those poor kids. Somehow though, we knew that sooner or later one of our beloved characters would succumb to "too much of a good thing" and be as it may that she decided to refuse treatment, like Joan [starting her own production company], Peggy, deciding to stay at McCann...they do it THEIR way.

Don and Peggy dance to Sinatra's "I Did It My Way"

Sally and Bettie's relationship reminds us how mothers and daughters clash like oil and vinegar at times - because, let's face it, none of us are perfect parents and those teen years! Oy! But in the end, love wins.

If only we'd known what we know now. Many of us survived riding in our parent's cars wearing no seat belts, playing with broken thermometers [mercury]...drinking, smoking when we were growing up...and so on.

We had made plans to visit friends in the Olympic Peninsula for the weekend and I began to have withdrawals leaving the house. Once we arrived at our destination friends and activities took my mind off..after all, that's what the dvr is for.

Sounds silly because I own the series on dvd format but watching it real time with other Mad Addicts is a completely different animal. Needless to say, when we returned home the following evening AMC was back on in full force.

And so we tried, once again, to revolve life around the marathon but as when first aired, episodes like the one where the Gingsberg character's schizophrenia of computers take over and suck you in. You stand there in disbelief. And you remember that there is always someone willing to take it to the next level, sadly. For instance; Walmart FEMA death camps (?) of late come to mind.

We need shows like Mad Men to remind us what times were like then. How some things never change, how some things have THANKFULLY changed for the better; Bettie having to wait for her husband to arrive in order to receive her test results. The sexual harassment women endured in the work place, racism, classicism and so on. In more ways than one, more than my love of vintage fashion, lifestyle, decor...Don Draper...I am sad to see Mad Men end.

The marathon relived so many memorable moments, one of my personal favorites "Waterloo" season 7 mid season finale, where Cooper says "Bravo!" as he watches the Moon Landing then passes away and later appears to Don Draper singing; "The moon belongs to everyone. The best things in life are free!"...The end. Yes, I got misty all over again.

Matthew Weiner wrapped a nice tidy bow around each character at the end. Pete back with his family boarding their own Lear Jet and Roger and Marie at the cafe.

Mad Men's legacy ends on a similar theme of how it began, an ad man [Don Draper] in 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes', struggling with a cigarette ad campaign in spite of public awareness of its health risks and its devastating consequence, one which nearly destroys him.

Towards the end, Don feels worthless. Having been told by Bettie [after hearing the grim news from Sally who is not supposed to tell him] that its best he stay away and not come for the children. Its the lowest we have ever seen Don. He may have been a lousy husband and father but he loved his children and never abused them, at least not intentionally [recalling the time Sally caught him having an affair with the neighbor] Maybe, if he had not been a product of that era maybe, just maybe he would have been a better father. A better husband, I seriously doubt.

The 'refrigerator fella' - who said at the meeting that he felt 'like something placed on a shelf, he sees the door open, people peering in with smiles on their faces then the door closes again, leaving him in the dark'...was literally saying what Don was feeling, but didn't know how to express it. He indeed had value and was needed and important. He had been shunned, attacked, belittled, demoted... even by those he was loyal to a fault to like Joan, Peggy... How many times did he offer Joan help yet she had no problem getting rid of him saying; "Im tired of him costing me money" and Peggy, he was her mentor, was always there for her yet she told him what a "monster he was" After a while chinks begin to form on the armor. Not that he was perfect, far from it but Don Draper at times was honest to extreme, like when he confessed how he was abandoned and grew up in a whore house in the Hershey's meeting.

But as Don Draper always does, he picks himself up from the ditch and lands one more time, on his feet. Or so they lead us to believe. Yes, I think Don's OM moment inspired him to write the Coca Cola ad and he is back in McCann's good graces. The end.

According to 2013's catwalks; the 90s are back. I noticed first hints of it last year. When designers like Christopher Kane sent his models wearing a casual-cool finish. Kane was quoted; “I don’t want some big beehive or loads of roses sticking out” "It’s got to be a laid-back, cool, and modern“ "She’s a really youthful, nonchalant girl, listening to Nirvana,” “She doesn't care too much.”

Frock Stars on the Smithsonian ChannelThe show is about The Way We Wore; one of Hollywood's hottest vintage stores, Doris Raymond treasure hunter extraordinaire and her team's adventures styling the glamorous.

She begins by describing her experiences in the business and explains that vintage clothing is at least one generation old. Such a good thing to keep in mind and for anyone who is entering the field to learn.

Among the celebs who have used her services are; Angelina Jolie, Renee Zellweger and Katie Holmes.

In the Premiere episode cameras follow Doris as she shops for the store at the Santa Monica Vintage Fashion Expo where she finds a McQueen, one of my favorite designers, and a Pauline Trigère.

I think many of us could sympathize when Doris stated she is able to go from the 'emotional high' of finding something to 'business mode' realizing sometimes a piece is just not worth taking a chance on, specially when there are questionable issues, alterations, no documentation indicating provenance, etc... She details such issues with a 30s altered Chanel dress and a Poiret.
Having found myself in those predicaments in more than one occasion, although Im sort of still kicking myself over a Ceil Chapman.

Back at the store, the gorgeous Dita von Teese drops by wearing this 50s New Look Dior.

von Teese models several amazing designs Doris had selected for her. I loved the 50's Little black velvet beaded Dior with the underpinnings.

A quick screen shot of that dress. Impeccable workmanship!

Dita only wears vintage and says that one of her favorite things about it is each garment's history. Some people say they do not wear vintage because someone else wore it. I have always felt that in reality when you buy something off the rack someone has probably tried it on or wore it somewhere and returned it!

One of the best features of the show I feel are the educational bios of each design featured. Many of these fashion industry programs do not show the garments in detail, they concentrate on the celebrity they are styling or the drama...so far thankfully L.A. Frock Stars is not so much about "reality tv drama" but about the business and the emphasis is on the vintage clothing. You dont see the stylist quickly rifling through a rack of clothing or a camera panning above a packed garment rack. Oh no! The garments in this show take center stage. They are carefully photographed and researched and the celeb models the garments.

I recorded the second episode titled 'The Awards Season' this episode is about the shop's busiest time of the year. When celebs, designers, stylists are all vying for attention and Doris shows what a pro she is at this. She has a kind, loving yet firm professional touch that I admire. This season I truly loved all the finalists.

Christopher was a personal favorite. He was consistently strong from the beginning and very creative with his fabrics. However, I was sad that he struggled towards the end. I also did not particularly care the way he turned into an ungracious meanie after Dmitry was announced the winner. It was extremely unflattering. I am hoping it is due to his immaturity and hope to see more from him.

Second from the left, Christopher's XRay dress, he was the only one to design his own fabric.

I feel Melissa really evolved. I'm glad that she listened to the advice about editing the jacket by removing the cuffs and by adding the blood orange dress for a pop of color to her collection.

Dmitry at times I felt needed editing, too many fringes, too much crystal. I didn't get the white pants with the crystal encrusted bib sheer top. I am also on the fence about the white cut-out dress. I think it could have looked better shorter but perhaps it was intended to appeal to a mature client.

I did not care for the make up used on Dmitry's models. I felt it took attention away from his designs. Maybe it was his way of injecting youth to his line.

I adored Fabio and his designs! He started out as my second favorite but towards the end I thought he was going to win.

His collection was a breath of fresh air. The best critique I have read about them is that the fabric flows over the body like water. Pieces I would be honored to own and I do not wear pastels. They are luminous, comfortable yet sophisticated. I also like that the pieces look like they could be easily mixed and matched. Fabio makes me want to see more from him.

It is already October yet I'm still trying to get through my September issue of Vogue Magazine. They say it is the biggest one ever. 916 pages. 4.5 lbs! Im glad we replaced our mailbox to a sturdier steel one from the old aluminum one with the deteriorating post which would have certainly toppled over from the weight.

Vogue's September issues of 08, 09...seemed pitifully slim compared to this one. It was almost as though the fashion industry was ashamed to flaunt opulence and style within such an economically repressed climate.

The Washington Post published an article titled "Vogue’s September issue: Boosting the spirit and economy in one fell swoop"

I almost squealed when I opened the foldout cover which includes two additional vintage Vogue covers, one from November 1, 1949 "Fashions For A Man's Eye", the other from December 17, 1892.

It is replete with ads, as the September issue should be. I mean, how else could designers show off their collections? I prefer full page instead of tiny thumbprint images on one page.

L'OREAL's "Flashback Forward" depicting fashion decades. I wore a similar green dress at a fashion show in NYC in the 70's, thankfully without the furry sleeves.

“Two days before my dog Rose died, I put her in the stroller and pushed her down the sidewalk,” author Ann Patchett wrote. “When my friend Norma bought Rose a dog stroller the summer before, I hadn’t wanted it, but feelings of idiocy were quick to give way to Rose’s obvious pleasure.”

Hear her talk about Rose in this interview. 'Dog is My Co-Pilot' Anthology of Literature Inspired by Our Four-Legged Friends

On that page, you can also read "This Dog's Life" the story originally published in Vogue magazine March 1997, the first time Rose appeared in Vogue.

I hope to finish it before the end of the week!.

Deborah Burke of Stamford, CT turned down a $500,000 offer for the dress that was worn by Marilyn Monroe on the 1962 film Something's Got To Give on the show Final Offer that aired on the Discovery Channel June 15th. I watched it and cheered her on for sticking to her guns all the way till the end. Do you think she made a mistake?

I've been reading comments that she should have taken the $500,000 offer. That what she paid on ebay hurt her chances of getting a fair offer...

I often hear that I could sell some of my high end pieces quicker if I priced them much lower but I know what they are worth because I pride in doing diligent research and give them exceptional care. I would much rather let someting sit than give it away. Sooner or later someone comes along that appreciates it as much as I do and recognizes its true value.

This particular dress's provenance is well documented as stated in Final Offer, every rose's leaf, every petal, bead...if that were not the case Ms. Burke would have never received the 500K offer in the first place.

In the program one of the bidders stated what she paid will hurt her. Why should the chances of what she paid hurt what the item is really worth? Just because I find an item in, say an estate sale, and at a later time decide to auction it...what the item is truly worth should not suffer because of what I paid. If anything, we love hearing stories of people finding treasures in the attic. We celebrate it. Just watch Antique's Roadshow and see for yourself.

This was a time in Marilyn's life when she was at her most beautiful.

The folks in the show Final Offer are middle men, not colletors. They had to low-ball Ms. Burke in order to make a profit from the sale of the dress. Owning that dress would have certainly brought their stores attention, notoriety... but are they passionate about Marilyn Monroe or vintage clothing? I'm willing to bet probably no.

Marilyn Monroe's name has a serious following of collectors with very deep pockets. I am confident that Ms. Burke will be able to sell that dress for the minimum of $800,000 for the dress worn by Marilyn weeks before her death.

Edit ~ I received information that THE Deborah Burke behind MM's dress may be lady behind Antique Dress. For years I have looked up to this lady. She is what lovers of vintage and antique fashions strive to be.

I also forgot to mention that there was a Documentary about Something's Got To Give where the making of the dress was documented. The bidders of Final Offer were fully aware of this fact as well.
Perhaps due to some of the serious snow and ice storms we have been receiving lately. As I type this we are on storm watch...the lone crocus poking its lavender head out of the ground is trying to tell me spring is almost here.

Imagine my delight when I found this sweet 40's Flower Garden Dress Hat from vintage friend Caryn. I think the 40s might be one of my favorite eras in Millinery Fashion History. I think the era was very creative and I believe many of the modern designers like Philip Treacy, dip into those decades for their award winning inspirations.

This beauty is not a Philip Treacy but creative in its own right. The label, as Caryn informed me, is a New York Creation. The New York Creation label was created by the New York Dress Institute who designed great dresses, hats, and even began their own best dressed list after WWII.

Made of black straw with velvetty roses, bow and netting. Turned up brim and ribbon tie. I imagine someone wearing it to church service or maybe an al fresco lunch date. What ever the occasion, Im sure it turned a few heads in its day.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9j7wV8TWM1ndb3dDk-A1eLa933m-48KJHeBFm6ktVTqkfFQSVmqnzcK1plXhDrDapK_fxNwal5tcRGkpdbYLYBoFRZGxlIt4SjaYNEvdWMHJtvdS7DMaVNJ64OjJ_vDwKtjBCvy74cWkl/s320/hat1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714383447308546290" />

Caryn has two vintage stores; one on ebay called specialneedzvintage, she told me "3 of my 5 children have Autism and through my children I learned that everyone has special needs."

She recently opened a shiny new one on etsy called Forever After Vintage.

Caryn is our 'resident fur expert' she says she learned how to id furs after buying one as one type and then learning it was a much less expensive type. Ok, more than a little.

Last Sunday ABC 20/20 aired a show called "Cruise Ship Confidential"

If you did not watch it, I recommend taking the time to go to the link above. It takes you straight to ABC.

The "report" ended at 10 minutes into the story. But they have an entire hour to fill...so....

It is now Tabloid or Sensationalism attempting to pass as Journalism. The "report" continues by showing a youtubes recorded in ships like the Royal Caribbean of people getting drunk. As if we dont have a clue that folks cruise in order to party. Some get obliterated. Yes. Is that any of our business? Who cares?

Continues by showing a man standing in the middle of a brawl, claiming to be on a Carnival ship recording. I don't know about you but if I were on a cruise ship and a brawl ensued, the last place you would catch me would be in the middle of it recording.

The host, Chris Cuomo, repeats the man's comment standing in the middle of the brawl claiming 'security running away'. You can clearly see later in the video that in fact security was getting re enforcements and talking into his phone.
Chris Cuomo fails to correct his statement. Normally clubs on cruise ships have 2-3 security guards. This situation clearly required more security personnel.

In the meantime the "innocent man" reporting is laughing in the video, running a commentary of what is going on..." and how Carnival doesnt care about them"

The 'report' then goes on to missing passengers; The honeymooner, George Smith on the Royal Caribbean's Brilliance of the Sea. The cruise line's name never mentioned, leaving the viewer to assume this took place on yet another Carnival ship.

Crew members - Disney's own, never mentioned, for instance; Rebecca Coriam, 24 Crew member from United Kingdom missing since she disappeared on Disney Wonder March 22, 2011

http://www.cruiseshipmissing.com/

20/20 mentions 'binge drinking' people falling down, they interview an individual, Tim Sears a 31 year old who had to climb over a rail of a Carnival ship in order to fall into the water. Binge drinking etc...takes place on land, air, sea... Adults need to take responsibility. I fail to feel sympathy for anyone who acts as a victim of their own actions.

20/20 goes on to sensationlize the program by doing an entire segment on what the crew does on their time off.

A Shari Cecil, who says she was raped and told to lie to passengers about outbreaks, breakdowns...but her cruise line is never mentioned the ‘Pride of Aloha’, operated by Norwegian Cruise Lines.

20/20 then goes on to the incident where the Carnival Splendor lost power, where the crew went above and beyond to care for its passengers yet 20/20 turns into 'passengers were served SPAM'.

Sorry 20/20 this folklore was clarified by Carnival back in 2010 yet you failed to do your homework?

Anyone can find the information by doing a simple search for the terms 'Carnival cruise Spam' results will come up with John Heald, Carnival's senior cruise director's personal blog where he wrote that the ship had received 20 pallets of supplies and food, including bologna, corned beef, pastrami, ham—and Spam. But the Spam, he wrote, wasn't served to guests or crew, and "those who said it was are misinformed."

Day By Day account of what took place on The Splendor.

That information has been readily available since November 12, 2010. How could anyone miss it? is completely baffling to me. Unless...they have ulterior motives.

If that wasnt enough, once again, yesterday on Disney owned ABC program The View they used Whoopie Goldberg - at 10:59

Falsely stating that 'Carnival was offering survivors of the Costa Tragedy 30% off their 'future cruises' as compensation.'

Audience GASPS!

Disney's media obviously took that from Costa's regular policy which can be found on Costa's website. The 30% discount is for people who have cruises booked and want to cancel and fail to re-book right away. It is their regular policy and nothing whatsoever to do with the survivors of the horrific tragedy.

Concordia official policy.

This is the actual official Costa Cruises statement:

"Passengers on board the Costa Concordia on the night of the accident have not been offered a discount on future cruises. "Costa is refunding the full cost of the cruise, the expenses incurred on board the ship, any transportation costs incurred to reach their port of embarkation and return home if transfers organized by the company were not used. Costa Concordia guests also will be reimbursed any medical expenses they may have incurred as a result of the accident. As regards items left in the safe in the cabin, these will be returned to guests as soon as we recover the safes. Regarding the loss of personal belongings and other forms of compensation, we will be contacting guests in the very near future."

Is Disney desperately resorting to sensationalism against their biggest competitor?
You tell me.

Anytime I watch ABC "news", I assure you will be purely by accident from now on, I will question the integrity of its reporting.

I strongly suggest a course on Ethics in Journalism.

Back to your regular scheduled programming.

THE HEROES OF THE CONCORDIA
<!--
